I’ve written two articles about how New Yorkers dress. In my first article, I discussed how New York is a hub for fashion and women’s style, with a unique approach and representation of style. In my second article, I discuss how the latest trend in fashion – streetwear – has taken over NYC and what its popularity means for New Yorkers.
New York is often cited as one of the most influential cities on trends in fashion. It has been used as a primary example to understand fashions development through time around America since its inception as well as globally in recent years with its prominence on social media and popular magazines like Vogue often featuring editorials on streetwear designers like Supreme, Off-White, and Kanye West that are featured.
In the 1920s, women who were homemakers and took care of their children in the evening couldn’t find fashionable attire. In response to this problem, fashion designers created „ready to wear” clothes that could be purchased at home.
The rise of New York as a fashion capital also led to a democratic movement in which every woman could have access to good-looking clothes. From high-end brands like Chanel and Dior, to makeshift teenage entrepreneurs selling knockoff bags on Canal Street, the city has always had a place for all levels of society.
Fashion is constantly changing with time and our demand for trends changes as well. The huge amounts of new ideas coming out each year are what make this industry so exciting!
One of the world’s most important cities for fashion is New York. From its origins in the early decades of the nineteenth century, when it was still a small city on the outskirts of America, to today as a global hub of design and style. From then, to now, and onward into the future, this city has always been at the forefront of fashion.
